Many hill stations in the neighbourhood of siliguri are found such as Gangtok, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Mirik and Kurseong and these belong to the north east connected to the other parts of India.

Siliguri sub division is surrounded by the ranges of sub Himalayan mountains towards the north, Bangladesh, U Dinajpur and Bihar are in the south, east has Jalpaiguri district and Kalimpong sub division while the west boundary has Nepal.


The capital city of Sikkim has come to be known as one of the important destinations for tourism as more and more tourists from all over the world come to this state with the little Himalayas. Gangtok in Sikkim is present in the laps of the majestic ranges of Himalayas, has become to be branded as a cosmopolitan region which has a great mix of old country charm and the traditional hospitality with the modern day developments of information technology.


Darjeeling is a city in the state of West Bengal which is near to the Himalayas and has become a tourist destination of international repute, which also has the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway along with tea industry, the former being declared as a World heritage Site by UNESCO. The hill station of Darjeeling is the headquarters of the district of Darjeeling which has a status of autonomy in the west Bengal state. The town of Darjeeling is situated in the lesser Himalayan area or the Mahabharat range, at a height of about 6,710 ft.

Development of the hill town started around the middle of the 19th century, after a sanatorium as well as a military depot was set up by the british. Gradually, the tea plantations were carried out extensively in the region and the growers of tea started to bring out variety of hybrid plants for production of black tea and also devised a number of techniques for fermenting. Nowadays, the Darjeeling tea has been labeled as a distinct beverage with international recognition and the black tea varieties have gained popularity. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway has connections from the hill station with the plain areas and consists of the locomotives which ran on steam, which is still in use. During the 1980s, the Gorkhaland movement for the demand of a separate gorkhaland state was centres on the town of Darjeeling.


In West Bengal, the hill station of Kalimpong is a pristine land 50 kms towards the eastern side, which overlooks the extremely beautiful valley of the Teesta. The hill station is located at a height of about 1250 m, from the sea and has plenty of activities going around. The hill town of Kalimpong is found at the foothills of the ranges of Shivalik along the lower Himalayas. According to the testimonies from various sources, it is thought that the area of Kalimpong was under the rule of the Bhutanese kings in the 19th century and belonged to the british army as a forward post.


Kurseong is located at a distance of 51 kms away from Siliguri and from Darjeeling it is 30 kms and above sea level at 1458 mts. Literarily the meaning of Kurseong is the location for the White Orchid. Due to the low elevation that the Kurseong is having, there is a mild temperature and soothing climate all around the year.

The peacefulness and the serene surrounding of the place attracts plenty of people to Kurseong. It is said that Rabindranath Tagore composed many of his poems in the calmness of Kurseong. In Giddhapahar in the vicinity of Kurseong, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose had been kept inside a house in 1936 by the colonial government.


The hill resort of Mirik is a small nested area in West Bengal, which is situated at a height of 1767 mts. This hill station mired in its own charms is at a distance of 49 kms and 52 kms from Darjeeling and Siliguri respectively. There is a long lake of length 1.25 kms which has water coming in from streams running throughout the year. The western slopes of the hill station are filled up with the thousands of trees of the Cryptomaria Japanica. A zig zag footwalk of length 3.5 km is found which goes along the lake.
