Siliguri College was established in 1950. It is situated in Siliguri in West Bengal state of India and is the oldest college in the city. It offers undergraduate courses in sciences and arts. The campus is located in the district of Darjeeling. It is affiliated to the North Bengal University and accredited to the North Bengal University. It is North Bengal’s largest general College.

On October 8, 1950, Siliguri College was established by the West Bengal’s Government under the dispersal scheme of Rehabilitation Department and Refugee Relief with the objective of imparting the Refugee students of the Siliguri’s post-partition population higher education. After the inception of College, initially it was affiliated to renowned Calcutta University. In 1962, it came under North Bengal University.

Affiliation and Accreditation

The recognition of the college is under the University Grants Commission (UGC). The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited it and awarded the grade of B++. The accreditation was later on expired. At present, the college is affiliated to North Bengal University.


The college has a very good library for the purpose of Reference and Text books. Other than this, there are also a sizeable collection of Encyclopaedias, gazetteers and many other rare print books along with manuscripts in the college library. There are about 37000 volumes in the library at present. In the very first two floors of the block of College, the library is situated. The opening and closing time of the library is till 5:00 pm from 10:00 am during weekdays and till 2:00 pm from 10:00 am on Saturday. A library card is issued after the admission to the student on the basis of this a student can take the books and borrow them from there. There is a reading room as well in the library in the buildings first floor. Some departments, in addition to the library of the college have also their own library for seminars.


There are separate hostels for both girls and boys in the campus of the college itself. The hostel for boys is older and it can accommodate about 63 boarders while the hostel for girls is only some years old. 48 boarders can be accommodated by it. A student who needs accommodation in the college hostel must first apply for it in a prescribed form that is available from the respective hostel’s superintendent’s office at the admissions time. At sessions beginning, very few seats in the hostel w are available. There might be more seats in the session later. The students who fail in the University or College’s final examination or the student who has not even appeared in the College or University examination in the last session will not be granted admission in the hostel. The boarders should vacate the college hostel during the Puja vacation. In the conduct and discipline matters, the Hostel Superintendent governs all the decisions of the hostel.
